Cross Addiction is a real danger for addicts in recovery. It is a common occurrence and often takes place when the addict’s “drug-of-choice” is withdrawn or is not available.
The addict may try to “take the edge off” with something else but becomes addicted to this new substance instead. For example, cocaine or marijuana addicts, often cross-addict to alcohol. About 70% of these addicts eventually become alcoholics.
Also alcoholics often become cross-addicted to other substances. Also, alcoholics who have stopped drinking find that use of other substances brings about relapse to alcohol.
Because it is so common for addicts to change their addiction focus because of cross addiction, they must abstain from all mood altering or euphoric substances even if prescribed by a medical specialist! All medications have to be checked out with your sponsor or on the internet. Look for warnings of addiction.
Remember: the disease is “Addiction” and it feeds on any mood altering, mind expanding or euphoric substance which is capable of giving a buzz or high.
